At Porto Cristo the Coves del Drac run down to Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes anywhere, and every session ends with a live classical quartet playing from boats on the water. The Coves dels Hams are next door and quieter. Both run to a fixed timetable, and the coach parties take the middle of the day.

The Wooden Train to Sóller
Narrow-gauge, varnished wood and brass fittings, built to carry oranges over the mountains and never modernised. It climbs out of Palma, runs through thirteen tunnels and comes out above the Sóller valley. At the far end an open-sided tram from 1913 rattles down to the port. Book the seats, not the coach that meets it.

Sa Calobra & the Torrent de Pareis
A gorge that cuts through the Tramuntana and opens onto a shingle cove with cliffs on three sides. The road in is a famous hairpin descent that ties itself in a full loop, which is why most people arrive by boat from Port de Sóller instead — forty minutes along a coast with no road at all.

When the tramuntana blows, Mallorca moves indoors.
The north wind the mountains are named for can arrive on a cloudless day and shut the boats in the harbour — sailings get cancelled and refunded with a few hours' notice.
